Terminology
There a lot of words related to the disabled community and its members that are constantly changing as time goes on. It can be a bit confusing to try and navigate medical, social, historical, and slang terms without some guidance. This section is full of various terms, their definitions, and context if necessary.
Disability
*Federal Definition
An impairment that substantially limits one or more major life activities.
Neurodiversity
The diversity of the human brain. The countless ways that our brains can differ from one another.
Neurodiversity Paradigm
The view that neurodiversity is natural, there is not a "normal" brain type, and what has been created around neurodiversity is similar to what has been created around other diversities (ethnicity, gender, etc).
Disability Justice
A movement that works towards removing barriers and creating a more accepting society for disabled folks.
Infantilization
The act of "infantilizing" or treating disabled folks as if they were children. Often used to deny autonomy.
Ableism
Discrimination against those with disabilities in any form. Often is more subtle and harder to notice than most think.
"Nothing about us, without us."
A saying from the disabled community that has risen in the movement for disability rights. Most decisions, laws, opinions, etc. on disability are made without the consultation of anyone with disabilities.
Identity vs Person First Language
Two ways of referring to people with disabilities. Person-first language is commonly used and put the person before the disability: "person in a wheelchair". Identity-first language has become more common with those that identify as belonging in the disabled community and puts the disability first: "wheelchair-user".

Someone that has a mind that functions differently than the standard of the "normal" mind.
Neurospicy
A slang term from the neurodivergent community used to refer to neurodiversity in a more positive connotation.
Disability Inclusion
Movements to further include historically under-represented groups in the Disability Justice movement.
Super-Crip
The act of glorifying or treating disabled folks as if any of their accomplishments, or simple existence, is something that makes them more than "human".
Masking
When a disabled person puts on a "front", "act", or "mask" in front of others due to the stigmas or treatment of their disabilities in society.
"Not accessible? Not acceptable."
A saying from the disabled community that has risen from the disability justice movement that refers to how a space is not acceptable if it is not accessible.
Neurodivergent (ND)
Having a mind that functions differently from the concept of the "normal" mind.
Neurotypical (NT)
Someone that has a mind that functions within the standard of the "normal" mind.
Asperger's
An outdated medical term for Autism that has been proven to be inaccurate and offensive.
Differently-Abled
A non-disabled community term created to try and cast disabled people in a more positive light to society. However, still puts disabled people into an "other" category.
Inspiration Porn
The act of idolizing disabled people as saint-like for existing with a disability. Often used to "inspire" or comfort non-disabled people.
Eugenics
The belief in the superiority of certain human traits that leads to the want to have those traits be the only that exist in society. Commonly used to argue against the existence of disabled people.
"Our homes, not their homes."
A saying from the disabled community that has risen from the disability justice movement that refers to the institutionalization of many community members despite their wishes. Also used against institutions that often mistreat and limit the individuality of their residents.

Terms listed below the encircled exclamation point under this statement are of a more sensitive nature. They have meanings and usages that have been used to hurt others or have been found offensive. While knowledge is important, that does not mean that kindness cannot co-exist in the same space. Please use caution when exploring these terms for both your own sake and that of others.
Cripple/Crip
A term and it's shortened version that were originally used to refer to disabled folks derogatorily. Some members of the disabled community have started to reclaim this term.
Retard
Originally a medical term, it has been used to derogatorily refer to those with mental-related disabilities.
Aspie
An inaccurate way of referring to people diagnosed with Asperger's, as the condition name itself is outdated. Some older members of the disabled community reclaim the term for themselves.
Midget
An offensive term that refers to those with dwarfism. Most prefer the usage of dwarf instead.
Freak
A term originally used to derogatorily refer to those different from the "norm". Some members of the disabled community have started to reclaim this term.
